VINTAGE TURKISH POSTAGE STAMP
Out of circulation. Single stamp
60 kurus stamp printed in 1961 by Guzel Sanatlar Matbaasi (Fine Arts Printingpress), Istanbul for the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Ankara University Language and History-Geography Faculty. The faculty has special significance as its establishmnet has been the brain child of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk the leader of the Turkish Revolutionary War and the first president of the Turkish Government. The faculty has initially opened to study Turkish language, Turkish history and Turkish culture in general. It was opened as part of Ministery of Education, 10 years later has been added to the Ankara University administration.
The image you see on the stamp is that of a large sculpture located in the front of the building. The famous Ataturk quote "Hayatta en hakiki mursit ilimdir" (The greatest guide in life is science (or knowledge or enlightenment)) witten on the left side of the stamp is written in the front center top of the faculty building as well.
Kurus was worth 100th of a Turkish Lira (TL) before the removal of the 6 zeros from the end to start the new lira. It has been long out of circulation.
